Weathering Of Silicate Glass

Factors affecting weathering resistance of float glass, calendered glass, optical glass, crystalline glass and vessel glass, morphology of weathering products and weathering process are reviewed.The relationship between alkali content of glass surface weathering and environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity and time is deduced: alkali content of glass samples increases with weathering temperature, humidity and time.The morphology and composition of weathering products were detected by SEM,WDS,EPMA and XPS.The results show that the weathering surface products of sodium-calcium silicate glass are mainly carbonate of sodium and calcium.If the glass occurs phase separation, the weathering resistance of the glass is not only related to the composition of the glass, but also related to the phase separation morphology.The si-rich droplets are easy to weather, and the degree of weathering increases with the number of si-rich droplets.Under the same conditions, the connected structure of rich silicon phase reduces the weathering degree of glass.The mechanism and methods of preventing weathering of glass are also described. The research direction of improving weathering resistance of glass is pointed out.
